Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina will not be leaving India anytime soon.
A source close to the family of Sheikh Rehana told Bangla Tribune that Sheikh Hasina will remain in India for the time being. Her sister Sheikh Rehana is with her constantly.
Sheikh Hasina, the recently ousted prime minister, has managed to establish contact with the top levels of the current Indian government.
Leaders and activists both from within the country and abroad have also reached out to her.
When Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh for India, there were rumours that she was heading to the UK. However, Bangla Tribune reported on the same day that Sheikh Hasina would remain in India.
Jamal Ahmad Khan, a leader of the UK Awami League and a close associate of Sheikh Rehana’s family, said on Tuesday: "The rumour that Sheikh Hasina applied for asylum in the UK and was rejected is completely false. I can assure that Sheikh Hasina did not apply for asylum in the UK."
However, another source mentioned that due to Sheikh Hasina’s stay in India, there is a risk of extradition requests from the interim government of Bangladesh over allegations of humanitarian crimes.
The discussion around this issue has intensified after a case was filed against her in Bangladesh on Tuesday.
