Ashfaqul Islam appointed as acting chief justice

Supreme Court's Public Relations Officer confirmed the news

Appellate Division Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam has been appointed as the acting chief justice following the resignation of Obaidul Hassan on Saturday.

The confirmation came from the Supreme Court's Public Relations Officer, Md Shafiqul Islam, who informed the media on the same day.

He completed his bachelor's degree and masters in law from the University of Dhaka.

Earlier, Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan stepped down from his post as head of the judiciary body of Bangladesh in the face of protests by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Prof Asif Nazrul revealed the information on Saturday afternoon.

It has been reported that five judges of the Appellate Division may resign as well along with the chief justice.
