Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained SM Amjad Hossain, former chairman of South Bangla Agricultural and Commerce Bank, while trying to illegally cross into India through Satkhira's Bhomra border.

Amjad, along with Barisal Awami League leader Nirob Hossain alias Khora Tutul, was detained on Thursday night.

Lt Col Ashraful Haque, commanding officer of the BGB's 33rd Battalion in Satkhira, confirmed the matter.

He said they had information about individuals accused of terrorism, drug trafficking, extortion, corruption, and other criminal activities who might try to flee to India through the Bhomra immigration checkpoint.

As a result, they tightened security measures at the border.

He said Nirab was detained as he was about to cross into India, followed by Amjad Hossain's detention later on Friday afternoon.

Amjad is under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for accumulating assets worth hundreds of crores, he said, adding that his assets include multiple properties in the US, as well as significant wealth stashed in Belgium, France, Singapore, Russia and India.
