6 killed in clash with BGB in Sreepur

Some 22 people with gunshot wounds sent to MMCH

Six protesters were reportedly killed and over 50 individuals including protesters were injured in a clash with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Sreepur upazila of Gazipur on Monday.

The incident took place in front of Mawna Chowrasta on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway around 12pm. 

Four of the deceased were Shorir Ahmed, 20, Jewel Mridha, 30, Kawsar, 28, and Sifat Ullah, 22. The identities of the other two could not be known immediately.

Some of the injured were identified as Zakir, 52, Idris, 30, Azhar, 30, Maruf, 19, Riaz, 24, Swapan, 35, Babul, 21, Shamim, 30, Raihan, 28, and Faruk, 26.

Locals said protesters blocked two buses carrying BGB members in Sreepur. There were 80 BGB members in those buses. As a clash ensued, three BGB vehicles were torched. 

On information, a helicopter came from Dhaka and rescued the BGB members. During that time, they said they opened fire in self-defence and six people were shot.

Obaidullah, manager of Alhera Medical Center at Mawna Chowrasta, said: “Five bodies were brought to the hospital with bullet injuries.”

Alhera Hospital in Maona Director Dr Abul Hossain, Sreepur said: “From the afternoon until 9pm, 50 people, including 22 who were shot, were treated.”

Some 22 people with bullet injuries were sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) after initial treatment. 

Dr Jarin Fara, a physician at the emergency department of Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, said: “Four individuals who were shot were treated at the hospital on Monday afternoon.”

Sreepur police station Officer-In-Charge (Investigation) Sohel Rana said: "We do not know anything about this matter."
