Law Minister Anisul Huq has said his ministry has sent its legal opinion to the Home Ministry recommending the ban of the Jamaat-e-Islami, its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir and other affiliates under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
A gazette notification on this matter would be issued shortly, the minister told reporters on Thursday.
Anisul said the decision to ban Jamaat and others had been made under Section 18(1) of the act, adding that once banned, these organizations would no longer be able to engage in political activities under their current names.
Government ministers accuse Jamaat and Islami Chhatra Shibir of being involved in vandalism, arson and other violent acts centred on the quota reform movement.
The 14-party alliance led by the Awami League made a political decision to ban Jamaat and Shibir at a meeting chaired by Awami League chief Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday at Ganabhaban.
Following the alliance's decision, the government is moving forward with an executive order to ban Jamaat.
According to regulations, the Home Ministry is responsible for issuing the gazette notification on this matter.
