The Editors' Council (Sampadak Parishad) of Bangladesh, an association formed to protect editorial freedom and promote responsible journalism in the country, has expressed deep shock and concern over the attack on journalists covering the ongoing quota reform movement across Bangladesh.
They urged all parties and security forces to ensure the safety of journalists while they carry out their duties, according to a media statement issued on Tuesday.
According to media reports, at least 25 journalists have been injured or attacked in various locations across the capital while performing their professional duties over the last two days. Several of them are currently receiving treatment in hospitals.
According to news published in various media and information from relevant sources, eight journalists were injured at Jahangirnagar University on the night of July 15, six in the Dhaka University area throughout the day on July 16, and nine others were injured in clashes in Chittagong, Dinajpur, and Bogra.
“Such attacks on journalists while they are performing their professional duties are highly condemnable and alarming,” it said.
The Editors' Council urged the government, all student organizations, and security forces to ensure the safety of journalists while they perform their professional duties.
On Tuesday, at least six people were killed and hundreds more injured during the clashes between the protesters and Chhatra League.
