PM slams quota reform protesters for calling themselves Razakars in chants

  • Unfortunate to hear slogan from girls that they are Razakars, PM says
  • Adds that protesters do not know atrocities committed during Liberation War

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has described slogans in which quota reform protesters are derisively calling themselves Razakars as regrettable, saying they do not feel ashamed to call themselves Razakars.

The prime minister on Monday was referring to "Who are you? Who am I? Razakar, Razakar" chanted by the protesters following her remark about the movement a day earlier.

"They do not know how the Pakistani forces and Razakars resorted to torture in the country… they did not see the inhumane torture and bodies lying on the streets. That is why they do not feel ashamed to call themselves Razakars," she while addressing the signing ceremony of annual performance agreements (APAs) for the 2024-25 fiscal year at her office.

"Our only target is to establish the spirit of the Liberation War. Hundreds of thousands of martyrs shed blood as many of our mothers and sisters were violated. We will not forget their contribution; we have to keep it in mind."

The prime minister said her government took legal action against the war criminals involved in mass killing, looting, violation of women, forming Razakar Bahini and Peace Committee, and giving them firearms.

Many of them were hanged following the trials and thus the repressed people got justice, she said.

Sheikh Hasina said it was most unfortunate to hear the slogan from girls that they are Razakars, considering that women were badly violated by Razakars during the Liberation War.

"Which spirit do they believe in? What education have they received? What have they learnt?" she asked.
