The body of a Bangladeshi youth was recovered on Wednesday from a waterbody near Science City in Kolkata.
The deceased, identified as Daud Hossain Upal, 23, from Dhaka, was found in the Pragati Maidan area, near the Barun Sengupta Metro Station.
Upal had arrived in Kolkata a few days prior and was staying at a hotel in the New Market area, reports the daily Anandabazar Patrika.
It remains unclear why he travelled to Science City or his reasons for being in Kolkata.
Witnesses reported seeing the young man jump into the waterbody at around 9am, later alerting the authorities.
Police, with the assistance of locals, retrieved his body from the water and transported him to NRS Medical College and Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Preliminary investigations suggest suicide, as no foul play is immediately evident, according to police sources.
However, they said they were exploring all possible angles, and no possibilities were being ruled out at this stage.
Authorities did not find a suicide note on Upal, and his body has been sent for autopsy.
Police are attempting to contact his family in Bangladesh to inform them of the incident.
