The holy Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad's (PBUH) grandson Hazrat Imam Hossain Ibn Ali (RA), will be observed in the country on July 17 as the Muharram moon was not sighted in the sky on Saturday.

So, the month of Muharram of 1446 Hijri will start on Monday while the 30th day of Zil Hajj month will be on Sunday, said a press release of Islamic Foundation (IF) Saturday.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee at Islamic Foundation (IF) conference room in Baitul Mukarram National Mosque here this evening. Additional Secretary for Religious Affairs Ministry Md Awal Hawlader chaired the meeting.

On this day in the Hijri year of 61, Hazrat Imam, the grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), along with his family members and 72 followers embraced martyrdom in the hands of Yazid's soldiers in the desert of Karbala to uphold the teachings of the Prophet.

The day is a public holiday.
