  • ‘This would intensify competition in recruitment’

Public Administration Minister Farhad Hossain said there is no plan to increase the age limit for entering government jobs to 35 years, explaining that increasing the age limit could significantly raise the number of applicants for various positions, thereby intensifying competition in recruitment.

“This could lead to disappointment among candidates under 30 years old,” he said during the question and answer session in the National Parliament on Wednesday.

The minister further said: "Currently, there are no major delays in educational timelines. Students usually finish their SSC at 16 and postgraduate degrees by 23 or 24. Given the job application age limit of 30, graduates have six to seven years to apply. If a candidate applies at 30, the recruitment process can take two years. Thus, the proposal to increase the joining age to 35 is almost justified."

Referencing the Public Service Commission's report, the minister said: “In the 43rd BCS exam, the highest percentage of recommended candidates were younger (23-25 years, 37.68%) while the lowest were older (over 29 years, 1.71%).

"The retirement age was increased from 57 to 59 years, reducing vacancies. Raising the job entry age could increase applicants and competition, potentially disappointing those over 30, despite their eligibility to apply."

Considering these aspects, the minister clarified that there is no plan to extend the age limit for government jobs to 35 years.
