Rajshahi city Awami League bodies declare Shahriar persona non-grata

During the rally, the leaders and activists burnt an effigy

Former state minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam MP has been declared persona non-grata by Rajshahi city units of the Awami League's associate bodies.

Leaders of the associate bodies made the announcement at a protest rally held at Zero Point, Shaheb Bazar, in the city on Friday.

The declaration came as Shahrial Alam blamed Rajshahi city Mayor Khairuzzaman Liton for the death of Bagha upazila AL General Secretary Asraful Islam Babul, the protesters claimed.

At the same time, they demanded exemplary punishment for the former state minister. 

During the rally, the leaders and activists burnt an effigy as well.

Rajshahi City Jubo League President Moniruzzaman Khan Monir presided over the program. 

They also demanded punishment for those involved in the murder.

Meanwhile, a case has been filed over the clash between two groups of the Awami League in the upazila on June 22. Shahinur Rahman, president of the upazila document writers’ association, has been named the main accused. Another 32 people were named in the case along with 150 unnamed persons. 

Asraful Islam Babul, died on June 26 at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital after receiving injuries during the clash between the supporters of Shahriar Alam and Bagha Municipal Mayor Akkash Ali.

The clash was triggered by a dispute over the collection of money by the upazila document writers’ association and supremacy.
