3 killed in Rangpur road crash

  • CNG auto-rickshaw driver body was recovered
  • 3 people under treatment are in critical condition

Three passengers were killed, and three others were injured when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw was run over by a passenger bus on the Paglapir-Jaldhaka road in the Dakshin Khalya area of Rangpur on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased are CNG driver Bhelsa Mia, Rimu Begum and Diba Rani.

Gangachara Model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Masumur Rahman confirmed the information and said: “The bus has been seized, but the driver and helper have fled. Efforts are underway to arrest them.”

Police and fire service sources said that the accident occurred when the passenger bus, speeding, ran over the CNG auto-rickshaw. The auto-rickshaw driver, Bhelsa Mia, was killed on the spot. After receiving the news, a team from the fire service arrived at the scene and rescued the injured, taking them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. 

Gangachara Fire Service In-Charge Momtazul Islam said, quoting eyewitnesses, that the bus was being driven recklessly. The body of CNG auto-rickshaw driver Bhelsa Mia was recovered. The seriously injured were rescued and sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where two more people died while being treated.

Three people under treatment are in critical condition, they said.
