Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali presented the proposed budget for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, totaling Tk797,000 crore (Tk7.97 trillion), in parliament on Thursday.
This budget includes proposed allocations for various government sectors.
Ministry of Land
The government has allocated Tk2,505 crore for the Ministry of Land in the proposed budget.
The allocation is Tk357 crore higher than the revised budget of Tk2,459 crore in the 2023-24 financial year.
Ministry of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment
A total of Tk1,217 crore has been allocated to the Ministry of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment.
The allocation is Tk510 crore higher than the revised budget of Tk1,018 crore for the outgoing fiscal year.
Education sector
The government proposed a raise in the allocation in the education sector in the budget for the next fiscal year compared to the allocation in the outgoing fiscal year.
According to the proposed national budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025, the expenditure on the education sector has been set at Tk94,711 crore.
The allocation is 11.9% of the total budget and 1.7% of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product).
Ministry of Defence
The government has allocated Tk42,315 crore for the Ministry of Defence in the proposed budget.
The allocation is Tk4,141 crore higher than the revised budget of Tk38,174 crore of the previous financial year.
Armed Forces Division
The government proposed an allocation of Tk46 crore for the Armed Forces Division for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
This was Tk36 crore in the revised budget for the 2023-24 financial year.
Law and Justice division
Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali proposed allocating Tk2,022 crore for the Law and Justice Division for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, which is Tk305 crore higher than the allocation in the revised budget for the outgoing financial year.
Medical sector
Considering the health sector as a priority, Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali proposed an allocation of Tk41,407 crore for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in the 2024-2025 fiscal year.
This is Tk38,051 crore higher than the budget of the outgoing financial year.
The finance minister in his budget speech in parliament also proposed Tk45 crore for the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
Power and energy sector
The country’s power and energy sector received an allocation of Tk30,317 crore in the 2024-25 fiscal year, which was Tk 34,819 crore in the previous fiscal year.
Placing the proposed allocation in the national budget 2024-25 fiscal year, Finance Minister Abul Hasan Mahmood Ali said that one of the main inputs of production is electricity.
“Our government is attaching highest importance and top priority to the development of the power sector and is implementing various projects to improve the generation, transmission and distribution systems,” he said.
Ministry of Social Welfare
Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali proposed allocating Tk12,869 crore for the Ministry of Social Welfare in the 2024-2025 fiscal year.
This is Tk1,317 crore higher than the allocation in the revised budget for the 2023-2024 financial year.
Road Transport and Highways Division
The government has allocated Tk38,143 crore for the Road Transport and Highways Division in the proposed budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
The allocation is Tk4,778 core higher than the revised budget of Tk39,710 crore in theprevious financial year.
Ministry of Industries
The government has allocated Tk2,510 crore in the proposed budget for the 2024- 25 fiscal year for the Ministry of Industries.
Ministry of Water Resources
The government has allocated Tk11,194 crore for the Ministry of Water Resources in the proposed budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
The allocation is Tk3,410 core lower than the revised budget of Tk10,244 crore in the previous financial year.
Civil aviation and tourism
A total of Tk5,695 crore has been allocated for the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry in the proposed budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
The allocation in the proposed budget is Tk655 crore less than the revised budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year.
