DAWC brings together Bangladeshi women artists for noble cause

Profits from the art sales will go to NGOs supporting women

The Dhaka American Women’s Club (DAWC) hosted over 150 art enthusiasts during its marquee fundraiser.

The fundraiser was held at the Gulshan Club recently. 

The “Women in Art” Silent Auction and Reception included two photographs by Paddmini Chakma, a DAWC grant recipient from the Chittagong Hill Tracts-based organization Supporting People and Rebuilding Communities (SPaRC).

Attendees had the opportunity to bid on the artwork and proceeds from the art sales will go toward non-profit organizations focused on empowering women and children in Bangladesh. 

The silen auction featured artwork from 28 emerging and established Bangladeshi women artists, including Kanak Chanpa Chakma, Rokeya Sultana, Maksuda Iqbal Nipa, Kuhu Plamondon, Monica Jahan Bose, Gulshan Hossain, Vinita Karim, Afrozaa Jamil Konka, Antora Merukh Azad, Asma Akber, Azizee Fawmi Khan, Farzana Rahman Bobby, Habiba Akhter Papia, Ivy Zaman, Mini Karim, Mukti Bhowmik, Nusrat Jahan Nazlee, Omi Islam, Paddmini Chakma, Preema Nazia Andaleeb, Riturupa Talukder, Sabrina Shaheed, Samia Rashid Hai, Shakirun Nahar Kanon, Sharmin Akhter Lina, Shruti Gupta Kasana, Suborna Morsheada, and Tasmina Khan Majles.

Since, 2023, DAWC has been six different NGOs committed to wide-ranging issues including children’s education, leadership opportunities for girls through sports, public health awareness as well as livelihoods and rights for indigenous women. 

“We are tremendously grateful to everyone who came out to celebrate talented Bangladeshi women artists and support a good cause,” noted DAWC President Kerry Breen.

“The response to the art was just amazing and we hope the artists have gained new long-term followers,” she added.

In addition, the event included a panel discussion with two powerhouse women from the art world – Nadia Samdani, MBE, President of Samdani Art Foundation, and Nusrat Mahmud, Co-Founder, Brihatta Art Foundation – who both spoke about the impressive rise of Bangladeshi women artists on the global stage, highlighting their growing presence in international art galleries and museums. 

The featured artwork was curated by DAWC Board Member Rumana Habib, with support from Md Abu Soyeb Jewel of ArtSense. Mutual Trust Bank PLC (MTB) was the main sponsor of the event.

Founded in the 1970s as a dynamic voluntary organization for American and Canadian women, DAWC aims to foster a strong sense of community and to engage in a fundraising event.
