A fire that burned a car on the Dhaka Elevated Expressway on Thursday afternoon was caused due to technical glitches, police said on Friday.

The incident took place on the expressway in Kuril area around 5:15pm.

Abu Shahriar of Gulshan, his wife and their two children were in the car. Shahriar’s brother was driving the electric car towards the airport, Badda Division Senior Assistant Commissioner Rajan Kumar Dey said on Friday.

They got out of the car as the fire erupted, the officer added.

Two units of Fire Service reached the spot and doused the fire, but the car, which costs around Tk1.5 crore, was fully damaged by that time.

Bhatara police filed a general diary over the incident.

Fire Service sources said they could reach the spot in five minutes since the nearby station was within 2 kilometres. But it took them 20 minutes due to delay in paying the toll at the expressway plaza.

The toll plaza officials did not allow the fire trucks to enter the expressway without paying the toll. Then the toll was paid through mobile banking, and it took around 10 minutes.
