An eight-member team of delegates from Yunnan University (YNU), China led by Prof Jimming Hu, the vice president of YNU, visited the International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) on March 27, 2024.

The team held a meeting to review the progress of Perennial Rice Research at the College of Agriculture, set up a Perennial Rice Joint Research Center and explore academic collaboration with the College of Business Administration.

The delegates visited the demonstration plot of perennial rice and expressed their satisfaction with the success of the research project and expressed their willingness to set up the Perennial Rice Joint Research Centre.

It may be mentioned here that over the last four years IUBAT has successfully conducted field experiments in the cultivation of perennial rice and it is now ready to take it to the farmers’ field.

Perennial rice is a long-lived rice variety that is capable of re-grow season after season without reseeding and crops can be harvested several times in successive years and its cultivation can save 58.1% of labor costs and 49.2% of input costs in each regrowth cycle, also benefit the ecological systems.

In 2018, the first cultivar of perennial rice 23, named PR23 was released in China (Huang et al., 2018).

In June 2019, five lines of perennial rice were introduced by IUBAT through a Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) between Yunnan University of China and IUBAT.

The initial cultivation of these lines took place during the Aman season of 2019 at the university campus on a small scale.

Following this successful trial, the lines were subsequently cultivated in the experimental field of CAS, IUBAT, located at Gazipur in January 2020.

The continuous success of perennial rice cultivation over four years at IUBAT is a noteworthy achievement in agricultural research and discovery in the country.
