President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Thursday called upon all pro-Liberation War forces, irrespective of party affiliations, to work together to spread the spirit of liberation war and communal harmony at the grassroots.

The president came up with the call as a delegation led by eminent journalist and president of Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee Shahriar Kabir on Thursday paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban.

The head of state said the anti-independence forces wanted to lead the country towards a different direction by distorting the history of country's Liberation War and Independence but people of the country did not allow it.

He also mentioned the important role of Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee in this regard, president's Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin told BSS after the meeting.

The president said the main goal of independence was to establish a non-communal Bangladesh to be freed from hunger and poverty.

But, he said, the anti-independence circle obstructed the achievement of that goal by assassinating Bangabandhu and his family in 1975.

The president also emphasized on the ironclad unity of all pro-independence forces for the betterment of the country and its people.

During the meeting, the delegation of Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee invited the President to attend its National Conference to be held on May 3.

The delegation issued a memorandum to implement the recommendations of the Shahabuddin Chuppu Commission, with the aim of speedily completing the trial of the 1971's mass killings, appointing more judges in the Supreme Court and ensuring communal harmony.

They sought the president's full cooperation in implementing the proposals and recommendations of the Shahabuddin Chuppu Commission.

The delegation informed that the 1971 Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee will publish the proposals and recommendations of the Shahabuddin Chuppu Commission immediately in short form.

President Shahabuddin was the chairman of the judicial inquiry commission formed soon after the general election in 2001 to investigate the incidents of attacks, killings, rapes and looting by BNP-Jamaat alliance activities on the minority communities.

This commission is also well-known as Shahabuddin Chuppu Commission.

President's Office Secretary Md Wahidul Islam Khan, Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin and Military Secretary Major General SM Salahuddin Islam were present there.
