Khalil Ahmed, a popular meat trader of Khilgaon’s Shahjahanpur area on Tuesday announced the sale of beef at Tk595 in the current month of Ramadan.
AHM Shafiquzzaman, Director General (DG) of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP), inaugurated the sale of meat at a discounted price at “Khalil Gost Bitan”.
At that time, meat trader Khalil said that he wanted to sell the meat to the customers at Tk500 during Ramadan, however, this was not possible due to the high cattle price.
Khalil Ahmed also said that this meat sale program at a discounted price will continue for 25 days.
A buyer can buy a maximum of five kg of meat at a fixed price.
Beef is now around Tk750-Tk800 per kg in the capital.
“Khalil has begun selling the beef at Tk 595 per kg. I believe the price of beef in the capital will fall below Tk700 again,” said DNCRP DG.
The DNCRP chief said Khalil earlier sold beef at Tk595 against the market rate of Tk800, which forced meat traders to lower the price and sell beef at Tk650.
Appreciating Khalil for his good initiative, Shafiquzzaman announced that Khalil would be given the “Best Trader” award during the national program marking "World Consumers Rights Day" on March 15.
The DNCRP DG requested members of law enforcement and intelligence agencies to ensure safety and security of Khalil as he was threatened earlier by other meat traders for selling beef at a lower price.
Khalil came to the limelight after starting selling beef at "Khalil Gost Bitan" on November 19 at Tk595 per kg.
Later, some other meat traders had to bring down price to Tk600.
