  • 50,000 tons of onions coming from India
  • ‘Market syndicate increases the prices of various products’
Update : 27 Feb 2024, 11:30 AM

Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Saturday said that the government would take all possible measures against the dishonest syndicates in the market to control prices of essentials as per the pre-election manifesto.

“In the election manifesto, we said that the price of essentials should be within the purchasing power of people, that is our priority. We have been working on that priority since the beginning of this government's journey and the government will take all possible measures against the dishonest syndicates in the market,” he said.

He said 50,000 metric tons of onions are coming to the country from India. Some onions will enter the market before Ramadan, so the market is fairly stable.

The foreign minister was replying to questions after getting reception from the members of his constituency Rangunia Samity, Dhaka at the LD Hall premises of National Parliament.

He said that the unscrupulous market syndicate increases the prices of various products on various pretexts.

“We have seen that 150,000 eggs have been recovered from a cold storage. Onion crisis was created in the past. Again, when onions were imported from abroad, the onions were spoiled in the market, then the rotten onions stored in the storage were thrown away. Our government will take all measures against such syndicates.”

Hasan Mahmud said: “It is also correct that those who want to bring down the government are also associated with this syndicate.

"Not only the wholesalers, but also the retailers tend to make a little more profit," he said, adding: “We have asked people to be aware of it. The government will also take all measures.”

When asked about BNP leader Nazrul Islam Khan’s comment that the current government must change, the foreign minister said: "The government will definitely change after five years. Then there will be elections in the country, then a new government will be formed. I hope Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be the head of that government again by the people's vote.”
