Two student leaders have been suspended from Jahangirnagar University (JU) for one year in connection with the vandalism of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's portrait and replacing it with graffiti on campus walls.

The expelled leaders, Amartya Roy, president of Chhatra Union, and Riddha Anindya Ganguly, general secretary, both from the university's 47th batch of the archaeology department, faced this decision during a syndicate meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Nurul Alam on Tuesday afternoon.

Registrar and Syndicate Secretary Abu Hasan confirmed the decision at the conclusion of the meeting.

He said that Amartya Roy and Riddha Anindya Ganguly were suspended for one year in connection with the removal of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's portrait, which had been previously painted on a wall at Jahangirnagar University. Additionally, a legal case has been initiated against them under state law.

On the night of February 7, a faction of JU Chhatra Union members removed Bangabandhu's portrait from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities building and replaced it with a graffiti. The student union leaders argued that this act was a protest against a recent rape incident. The caricature portrayed a female figure and a flag with six skulls, accompanied by the text "freedom from rape and tyranny."

Subsequently, two pro-Awami League teachers' organizations condemned and protested the incident. In response, the university administration formed a committee to investigate the matter, and the decision to expel the students was based on the committee's recommendations.

Expressing satisfaction with the punishment, Chhatra League leader Enamul Haque Enam said: "I thank the university administration for penalizing those involved in the incident. I am pleased with this verdict, and it was the right decision."
