Following a series of factional clashes recently, the Dhaka University unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League may have to wait to get a full-fledged committee, its leaders and activists suspect.

The committee was supposed to be formed this week.

One of the factions is loyal to the Chhatra League central committee’s general secretary, Sheikh Wali Asif Enan, while the other follows DU unit Chhatra League General Secretary Tanbir Hasan Shaikat.

The two groups of the student wing of the ruling party at DU started attacking one another on Thursday night centering on a concert at the Jagannath Hall premises, leaving at least 14 injured.

One of them, Apurba Chakrabarty, who was hit in the head, was being treated at the Intensive Care Unit of a private hospital in Dhaka as of 10pm last night.

The brawl erupted again at Madhu’s Canteen on Friday afternoon, triggering panic among general students on the campus.

Such clashes between factions led by top Chhatra League leaders at the university are nothing new. At least 10 persons were injured after clashes broke out in June last year. Similar clashes were also reported after the Chhatra League’s DU committee was announced the last time.

About the committee

The partial committee of the Chhatra League was announced with Mazharul Kabir Shayan as its president and Tanveer Hasan Saikat being named general secretary on December 20, 2022.

A year later, the committee’s tenure ended on December 20 last year. It also failed to announce the 121-strong full committee.

However, the partial committee is currently working under a 90-day extension of its tenure cleared by the Chhatra League central executive committee.

Leaders smell a rat

Talking about the tense situation centering on the infighting, a Chhatra League leader anonymously said there could be bad intentions in the leaders of the factions, who are deliberately trying to delay the formation of a full committee.

“Maybe they are not happy with the process,” he said.

Another Chhatra League leader, who also spoke requesting anonymity, said besides his fellow organization members, outsiders were also engaged in the clashes at Jagannath Hall.

“It indicates the strong possibility of a deliberate engineering of the brawl in a bid to defer the new DU Chhatra League committee’s formation,” he said.

Meanwhile, a leader on the central committee expressed his concern over the clashes and delay in announcing a full committee at DU.

“The deferral is also frustrating the post-seekers and dedicated members of the organization at DU,” he said.

Chhatra League central, DU top brass ‘hopeful’

Amid the speculations regarding the delay, Chhatra League President Saddam Hussain does not think the clashes will cause such an event.

“The committee at DU will be announced promptly,” he told this correspondent, without mentioning any specific date.

Instead, he reiterated: “It will be done quickly.”

Enan, Shaikat and DU Chhatra League President Mazharul Kabir Shayon echoed Saddam’s sentiments, brushing aside the potential delay in announcing a full-fledged committee at the university.
