The Cyber Crime and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) on Sunday arrested two people who sent an email threatening to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on April 17 last year.
The arrest and deportation were made with the help of the Saudi Arabian government.
The arrestees have been identified as Deen Islam and Kabir Hossain. They are now in police custody.
According to the CTTC, an email was sent to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), which read: "Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be shot at 4am on April 27. Bangladesh police do not have the power to prevent this attack.”
The CTTC said two of the attackers have been identified with the help of the Saudi Arabia government.
The two were brought back to the country on January 29 after an application was sent to the Saudi Arabia government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said CTTC Additional Commissioner Asaduzzaman at a press conference at the DMP media centre on Sunday.
He told the reporters that the arrestee Kabir Hossain is the president of the Saudi Arabia unit of Jubo Dal. Deen Islam is also a member of the party.
Asaduzzaman added that the arrestees threatened to attack Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to create chaos in the country. “Efforts are on to find out if anyone else was involved with them.”
The CTTC was able to identify the sender of the email after running a technical analysis and confirmed the identity of Deen Islam.
A review of the IP address of the email sender revealed their location in Saudi Arabia.
CTTC sources also said the arrestees had brought a mobile phone and opened a new email ID to send that threat. After sending the email to DMP, they destroyed the phone and deactivated the email ID.
