As part of the government's decision to import potatoes to keep its price stable, an Indian truck loaded with 25 tons of potatoes arrived through Hili Land Port in Dinajpur on Saturday.
“The government has approved the import of 34,000 tons of potatoes through the Hili land port from India,” said Harun Ur Rashid, the president of the Hili Land Port Importer-Exporter Group.
In continuation of that approval, its first consignment entered Bangladesh, port authority sources said, adding that three more trucks carrying around 75 tons of potatoes are expected to reach Bangladesh through the port by Saturday.
Earlier, the government had allowed the import of potatoes on October 30 last year to control the market when the price of potatoes rose in the country on the excuse of low supply.
The import period was till November 30 last year. Later, the deadline was extended by another 15 days to December 15 based on the application of traders. The import of potatoes through the port has been stopped since December 15.
Potato imports from the neighbouring country India through Hili Land Port in Dinajpur began again Saturday.
