The prices of vegetables have declined slightly in Dhaka due to the large amount of winter vegetables available at the kitchen markets, making them more affordable for consumers.
However, buyers cannot breathe a sigh of relief just yet as the price of onion has increased recently.
Consumers are saying that despite the price of vegetables being reduced, their overall cost has not seen a significant decline.
A visit to a kitchen market in Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar area revealed the current situation.
However, compared to last week, the prices of vegetables in the market have declined by Tk5 to Tk20.
In the market, beans are priced at Tk60-80, white and purple turnips at Tk30-40, raw tomatoes at Tk40, ripe tomatoes at Tk70-80, spring onions at Tk50, radish at Tk40, carrots at Tk40, long eggplants at Tk100, white round eggplants at Tk90, black round eggplants at Tk100, cucumber at Tk580, local cucumber at Tk70, green peas at Tk110-120, radish at Tk40, raw or green papaya at Tk40-50, pumpkin at Tk35-40, lady finger at Tk100, red cabbage at Tk50, white cauliflower at Tk40, broccoli at Tk50 and bottle gourd at Tk80-100.
Apart from this, onions are being sold at Tk90-100 per kg, red and white potatoes at Tk40-45, Bogra red potato at Tk60, local garlic at Tk280, Chinese garlic at Tk220-250, Indian ginger at Tk240.
In this case, compared with last week, it can be seen that the price of onion has increased by Tk5-20.
Shafiul Islam Titu, a private company employee who came to the market, said that the price of most vegetables in the market decreased on Friday. But the price of onion has not decreased; on the contrary, it has increased.
“If the price of something goes down and something else goes up, then we could not really reduce our expenses. The cost remains what it was,” he added.
Another buyer, Md Hafizur, said: "Nothing is right in the country. Today the price goes down and tomorrow it goes up again. Nothing is stable.”
Vegetable seller Mamun said that the price of vegetables has come down a lot. It seems likely to decrease further.
Alamgir Hossain, a potato-onion seller, said that the price of potatoes has decreased since earlier. But the price of onions has increased. Different quality onions are available in the market. Onion prices vary depending on quality. In this case, the price is slightly higher or lower.
Meanwhile, prices of all grocery products remain unchanged.
