RMG worker fatally hit by truck in Tongi, triggering agitation

  • Hit while crossing highway
  • Hundreds of workers of the factory blocked the highway

A worker at an RMG factory was killed by a truck that ran him over in Tongi on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Atiqur Rahman, 40, from Gaibandha, He worked at the Eastern Tex factory in Tongi.

Tongi West police station Officer-in-Charge Sakhawat Hossain confirmed the matter.

According to locals, Atiqur was returning home after working at the factory around 7pm on Tuesday. He died on the spot when a Gazipur-bound truck hit him while he was crossing the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in front of the factory.

As the news of the death spread, hundreds of workers of the factory blocked the highway and protested. Vehicular movement on the Dhaka-bound lane of the highway was halted for about an hour.

Atiqur's body was sent to Gazipur Shahid Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, according to OC Sakhawat. His family members have been notified and they are expected to make their way to Tongi at the earliest. 

Traffic police seized the killer truck from the Signboard area of the city. 

Meanwhile Atiqur's agitating co-workers were eventually persuaded to cease their protests, or move somewhere else. As they complied, traffic movement was normalized, he added.
