State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has said the gas crisis across Bangladesh will be resolved by March.

"Another 1.6 TCF of new gas reserves have been found in Bibiyana. It will be confirmed in the next few days,” he said at a press conference at the ministry on Tuesday.

Expressing regret for the sufferings of the people during the ongoing crisis, the state minister said: "It will take some more days to overcome this crisis. One of the country's two LNG terminals is out of the country for renovation. Due to this, the ongoing gas crisis has increased.”

He said Petrobangla cannot increase the gas supply until the LNG terminal is fixed and back in Bangladesh.

“Every year in winter, there is a gas crisis due to the accumulation of water in the pipeline. Similarly, the demand for gas increases as the temperature drops. This time, the gas crisis has increased due to the lack of supply,” Nasrul Hamid said.

He added that during Ramadan and summer, the electricity demand will increase. “The government is now taking initiatives to deal with this demand. In the meantime, the demand for next summer has been fixed at 17,500 megawatts.”
