A man, who was injured during an alleged attack carried out by activists of the Eagle symbol in Pirojpur on Wednesday, succumbed to his injuries in Dhaka on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Jahangir Panchayet, 60.

He breathed his last at 8am at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Emadul Haque Khan, convener of the election management committee of independent candidate Shamim Shahnawaz claimed that Jahangir Panchayet was one of their active workers.

Supporters of rival independent candidate Rustum Ali Faraji, MP, hacked him to death in a planned way, he claimed.

Dr Md Rustum Ali Faraji's election management committee Member Secretary Azizul Haque Selim Matubbar said: "The incident is related to a land. They (opponents) are trying to make it an election issue out of fear of losing in the polls.”

According to locals, Bashir Farazi, son of late Karam Ali Farazi of Badura village of the upazila, had a long-standing land dispute with Jahangir Panchayet of the same area.

Abdul Halim, officer-in-charge (operation) of Mathbaria police station, said a case has been filed on Wednesday night in connection with the attack on Jahangir Panchayet over a previous land dispute.

Pirojpur Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shariful Islam visited the spot and said: "This is not an election incident. The incident is related to a land. Jahangir’s wife Bulu Begum filed a case with Mathbaria police station on Wednesday night. We are investigating the matter.”
