ASK: 573 women raped in 2023

  • 33 women murdered after rape
  • 122 men tortured for protesting

A recent report conducted by Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), a legal aid and human rights organization, has revealed that a total of 573 women were raped across Bangladesh in 2023.

The organization unveiled its annual report on Sunday.

Among these, 33 women were murdered following rape and five committed suicide. Additionally, 129 women were targets of attempted rape, with three being killed following such attempts, and three committing suicide due to attempted rape.

Like previous years, various forms of violence against women, including rape, sexual harassment, domestic abuse, and arbitration, occurred in the year.

The report indicates that at least 142 women were subjected to sexual harassment and stalking in 2023, with 12 committing suicide. 

Moreover, 122 men were victims of torture and harassment for protesting such incidents, and four women and four men were killed in the process of protesting.

The report also highlights the growing unsafe environment for women online, with increasing discrimination, disrespect, and sexual harassment in this medium.

Regarding domestic violence and dowry, the report says that 507 women were victims of domestic violence this year. Of these, 292 died due to torture, and 142 committed suicide.

In 2022, some 479 women suffered domestic violence. 

In 2023, 142 women suffered from dowry-related violence, with 64 being killed after physical abuse and six committing suicide.

In 2023, a total of 32 female house helpers were victims of domestic abuse and acid attack. Six of them died due to physical torture, and one died mysteriously. On the other hand, 10 women have been victims of acid attacks this year.
