Expelled BNP leader and senior journalist Shaukat Mahmood launched his campaign after getting the election symbol on Monday.
He is contesting the 12th parliamentary election as an independent candidate from the Comilla-5 constituency.
Talking to journalists after receiving the symbol Eagle, Shaukat Mahmood said many have termed him an agent of the government. But there are still 62 cases in different police stations against him. If there had been any compromise with the government, there would have been no cases against him.
He also said the Election Commission (EC) is acting as a caretaker government, adding that he has never seen the EC transfer so many administration or police officials before.
“The rural people are supporting me. They think I will win if the polls are fair,” he added.
Shaukat said black money is being distributed among voters in his constituency, which the EC should monitor closely.
He alleged that the ruling party candidate, Sazzad Hossain Swapan, and two other independent candidates have already distributed around Tk200 crore
