Ganatantra Mancha leader and Chief Coordinator of Ganasanghati Andolon Zonayed Saki on Saturday alleged that a large part of the economic development is being looted.
He said this while talking to journalists after paying respects to the martyrs at the National Memorial in Savar.
Saki said: “Development is a continuous process. Development means improving people's lives. Infrastructure can temporarily increase the size of an economy.”
He also claimed that Bangladesh is facing an economic crisis.
Saki said: “We have to fight for voting rights. This is an 18th-century claim. The people of Bangladesh now have to decide which direction the country will go. As the country became independent after a fight in 1971, today the country's independence is completely forgotten.”
Zonayed Saki said: “We have to build a democratic Bangladesh if we want to manage our country in the spirit of independence. Voting rights must be established. We have to stop the comedy show in the name of the election. A new schedule must be made. We have to fight for how we can move to a democratic state system, through participatory elections.”
People from all walks of life have flocked to the National Martyrs' Monument in Savar to celebrate Bangladesh’s 53rd Victory Day and pay their respects to the martyrs, who sacrificed their lives for the motherland.
On Saturday morning, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing wreaths.
As the day progressed, the number of people swelled, transforming the area into a vast sea of individuals, united to show their gratitude to the martyrs.
The Victory Day is a national holiday. It is celebrated on December 16 every year to commemorate the victory of Bangladesh against the Pakistani occupation forces in the Liberation War in 1971.
The Pakistani occupation army surrendered to the joint forces of Bangladesh and India ending the ninth-month blood-stained Liberation War to make Bangladesh an independent state.
Along with the government, different socio-political, educational and cultural institutions and organizations have chalked out a series of programs to celebrate the day.
