State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid on Monday said Bangladesh has taken the initiative to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 61.9 million tons of carbon dioxide by 2030.

He also urged the utilization of solar power to secure the prosperity of future generations.

The state minister made the comments while speaking at a discussion program organized by the International Solar Alliance (ISA) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

"Last year, 300MW of solar power was added to our energy mix. Work is underway to generate 2,400MW of solar power through 37 projects. There's also a plan for generating 5,000MW from renewable energy, with some projects underway and more waiting for approval,” he added.

Despite land constraints, Nasrul said, Bangladesh has taken innovative steps in solar technology through solar home system, mini grid, and other projects.

He added that the ISA's vision is reflected in the recently approved Integrated Energy and Power Master Plan 2023, which aims to import 50.4 trillion watthours of clean electricity annually by 2050.

Besides, there is a plan to import renewable energy from neighboring countries by increasing regional cooperation. There is no alternative to promoting renewable energy for sustainable development and a clean future, the state minister added.
