An Indian couple and a police constable were among 16 people killed in separate road mishaps in Satkhira, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Gazipur, Feni, Munshiganj and Jessore on Saturday.
The Indian nationals, hailing from Siliguri in India’s West Bengal, died when a truck crashed into a private car at Taltala in Sadar upazila of Satkhira.
The deceased are Asim Kumar Biswas, 45 and his wife Chobi Biswas, 42.
The accident occurred around 8am in front of the Satkhira camp of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
Confirming the matter, Satkhira Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahidul Islam said Asim was the deputy manager of the Khulna-Mongla railway project. He along with his wife was en route to India through the Bhomra land port.
Quoting witnesses, the OC said the accident took place when a Khulna-bound truck hit the private car leaving the couple dead on the spot and the private car’s driver critically injured.
In Rajshahi, five people of a family were killed and one injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Belpukur in Rajshahi in the afternoon.
The deceased are Parveen Begum, 35, Sharmin, 17, Insab Ali, 75, Ayub Ali Labu, 35, and CNG driver Mokhlesur Rahman, 35. The injured is Hridoy, 18.
Paba Highway Police Station OC Mofakkarul Islam said: “A collision occurred between a truck and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw near the Belpukur Bypass area.
One of them died on the spot. The driver of the truck and his officials fled after the incident.
In Chittagong, three employees of the Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company were killed and another was injured when a speeding truck ran them over on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway.
The accident took place at 7:30am in Mirsharai upazila.
The deceased are Masud Mia, 35, Alamgir Hossain, 45, and Shafiqul Islam, 42. They were.
According to locals, two of the workers died on the spot.
Another injured worker was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. His identity could not be known immediately.
Joarganj Highway Police Outpost In-Charge Sohel Sarkar said the truck was seized and brought to the police station, but the driver managed to escape.
In Gazipur, 30-year-old Bitan Barua, a constable of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, was killed and two other policemen were injured when a police van overturned after being hit by a lorry at Rajendrapur Chourasta.
Swapna Begum, sub-inspector (SI) of Gazipur Sadar Police Station, said the police vehicle overturned around 4am after the lorry rammed it while it was taking a U-turn on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, leaving two constables and an SI, said Swapna.
In Feni, two people including an eight-month-old child died after a pickup van knocked over a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Fulgazi upazila. Five others were injured in the accident.
In Munshiganj, an elderly woman and his grandchild died as they were run over by a bus on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Gajaria upazila.
In Jessore, 15-year-old Raj Babu died in Benapole while returning home.
