The government has proposed a draft for RMG workers with Tk12,500 as the minimum monthly salary, raising it from Tk8,000.

The Minimum Wages Board issued a gazette notification on Saturday regarding this and seeking written objections, appeals or proposals within 14 days against the draft.

Dhaka Tribune obtained a copy of the gazette notification on the draft.

The board will send the final proposal to the government after considering the proposal or denial from anyone in the meantime, reads the notification.

Meanwhile, trade unions sent a written appeal to the Labour and Employment on Sunday, citing the proposal as insufficient to lead a decent life considering the ongoing severe inflation.

They urged the prime minister to review the wage proposal as she did in 2018 and before.

Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina set Tk12,500 as the minimum monthly salary for RMG workers and the new wage structure will be effective from December 1. State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian announced the decision on November 7.

RMG workers rejected the decision and demonstrated in many areas, including Dhaka and Gazipur, while many workers and policemen were injured in clashes. At least four RMG workers, including a woman, have so far died in clashes with law enforcers over the past few days.

One more RMG factory worker, who sustained injuries in a clash with law enforcers during a protest over basic salary hike in Gazipur’s Konabari last Wednesday, died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Saturday night.

Since the beginning of last year, workers have been demanding Tk23,000 as the monthly minimum wage considering high inflation in the country, but their representative has proposed Tk20,390 as the minimum wage.

In the draft proposal, the government proposed Tk12,500 gross wages with Tk6,700 basic salary for assistant operator under grade-5, followed by Tk13,025 gross with Tk 7,050 for general operator under grade-4, Tk13,550 gross salary with Tk7,400 for junior operator under grade-3, Tk14,150 gross salary with Tk7,800 basic wage for operator and Tk14,750 gross with Tk8,200 basic for senior operators.
