  • Vehicular movement disrupted
  • Protesting workers not satisfied with salary hike
Update : 12 Nov 2023, 11:00 AM

Readymade garment (RMG) workers on Saturday morning blocked roads in Mirpur 10, 13 and Pallabi areas in Dhaka, demanding a wage hike

Hundreds of workers were seen gathered on the roads since 8am.

According to Kafrul police station, the RMG workers blocked the road in the Mirpur-13 area first and later moved to Mirpur-10 as well.

Vehicular movement on the road between Mirpur-10 and Mirpur 14 has been disrupted due to their movement.

The protesting workers said that they were not satisfied with the government’s set minimum wage.

When the workers went to their factories on Saturday, they observed that everyone's salary did not increase at the same rate.

The government announced a 56% increase in salary, but it was not implemented.

The salary of experienced workers has increased by 20-30%. This is why they are protesting, claimed some of the workers.

Over the last two weeks, workers demonstrating for a minimum wage of Tk23,000 clashed with law enforcers in Gazipur, Savar, and the capital's Mirpur.

On October 30, garment worker Rasel Howlader, 26, died after Gazipur Industrial Police personnel allegedly shot him at close range, and on November 8, Anjuara Khatun, 28, a sewing machine operator of Islam Garments in Gazipur, died of gunshot injuries after police opened fire on protesters.
