A total of 93 BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists were arrested for their involvement in violence, arson attacks, and torching incidents during the countrywide strike in Feni since October 28.
Seventeen cases were filed in total, out of these, 11 cases were filed by the police and six cases were filed by local Awami League and Jubo League leaders and workers.
Feni Model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Shahidul Islam Chowdhury said: “On Sunday, BNP and Jamaat set tires on fire and blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Mohipal and Fazilpur, attacking the police with cocktails. Police used rubber bullets to disperse them. Multiple cases have been filed in all these incidents."
“Police arrested four people after carrying out raids in Feni and Sonagazi police stations on Sunday night. A total 93 people have been arrested in the last few days,” he added.
According to the police, BNP and Jamaat leaders and activists have been causing vandalism, disrupting daily life, and blocking highways for several days during the BNP's blockade program after October 28.
A total of 17 cases have been filed under the Sabotage and Explosives Act in six police stations in the district, with 11 of them in Feni Sadar Model police station.
District BNP Convener Sheikh Farid Bahar and Member Secretary Alal Uddin said that they consider these cases for political harassment. They said that the police themselves are filling these to harass them and try to oust the BNP aiming for one-sided elections.
Feni Superintendent of Police Zakir Hasan said: “Police performed their duties to safeguard people's lives and property. Those involved in harmful activities will not be spared. Operation will continue to arrest those against whom the case has been filed.”
