Police on Tuesday detained retired army officer Lieutenant General Hasan Sarwardi for allegedly assisting in arranging the press conference at the BNP office where a man posed as US President Joe Biden's adviser.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner Harun-or-Rashid confirmed his detention from Savar area on Tuesday.

Hasan Sarwardi will undergo interrogation at the intelligence office, and a case has been filed against him at Paltan police station.

On Saturday evening, Mian Jahidul Islam alias Arefy went to the BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan and spoke to reporters introducing himself as an adviser to US President Joe Biden.

Following the incident, officials of Bangladesh Police's Immigration Services detained Arefy from Dhaka airport on Sunday afternoon.

During an interrogation by the Detective Branch (DB) of police, Arefy claimed that BNP leaders had taught him what to say during the press conference held at the party’s central office.

On Monday, the US embassy in Dhaka has sought consular access for Arefy.

Later in the day, a Dhaka court sent him to jail in the case filed with Paltan police station on charge of cheating people with false identity.
