A leader of BNP’s Swechasebak Dal was allegedly killed in a police chase in Comilla's Burichang upazila.

The deceased has been identified as Zakir Hossain, 35, president of Mokam Union  Swechasebak Dal of the upazila.

According to the victim's family, some policemen went to Zakir's house at 3:30am on Sunday and asked him to come out of his house.

When he tried to escape through the back door, the police chased him. When Zakir did not return home, the family thought that Zakir had been taken away by the police.

However, in the morning, locals found his body near his house and informed the family.

Zakir was taken to Eastern Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Shariful Islam, vice-president of Burichang upazila BNP, said police raided the house of Union Swechchhasebak Dal president Zakir on Sunday night. Zakir's body was found near his house by locals in the morning.

Mizanur Rahman, president of Burichang upazila unit BNP, said the victim's family claimed police had raided their house on Sunday night, and they later found Zakir’s body in the morning.

He mentioned that Zakir's hands bore marks resembling handcuff indentations, which made them believe he died due to police brutality.

Inspector Jabed ul Islam, officer-in-charge of Debpur police outpost admitted that police went to Zakir’s house, but they did not find him.

Burichang police station Officer-in-Charge Abul Hasnat made the same claim, and said they will conduct an investigation soon.
