The severe cyclonic storm Hamoon will hit the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar coast on Tuesday evening.
Analyzing the speed of the cyclone, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said that under the influence of cyclone Hamoon, 15 coastal districts may encounter storm surges several feet above the usual levels.
Earlier in the day, BMD asked Chittagong and Payra ports to lower warning signal no 4 and requested to hoist danger signal no 7 instead.
Additionally, Cox’s Bazar port has been asked to hoist danger signal no 6, said a special bulletin of BMD.
Cyclonic storm Hamoon has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over the Northwest Bay and adjoining West-Central Bay and moved Northeastwards on Tuesday.
It lies about 445km West-Southwest of Chittagong port, 410km West-Southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 325km Southwest of Mongla port and 310km Southwest of Payra port.
It is likely to move North-Northeastwards and may cross the Barisal-Chittagong coast near Bhola by Wednesday morning to noon as a cyclonic storm.
The maximum sustained wind speed within 64km of the storm centre is about 90kph rising to 110kph in gusts or squalls. The sea will remain high near the severe cyclone centre.
All fishing boats and trawlers over the north Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain in shelter till further notice.
The disaster management and relief ministry has taken an all-out initiative to face the catastrophe of the severe cyclonic storm Hamoon with the government making preparations to evacuate some 1.5 million people from 10 coastal districts.
Necessary relief has also been allocated for these 10 vulnerable districts, said Disaster Management and Relief Secretary M Kamrul Hasan after a meeting at the ministry conference room on Tuesday, reports BSS.
