Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) Chairman Air Vice Marshal M Mafidur Rahman on Saturday said the opening of the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) is the start of a new chapter for Bangladesh.

He emphasized that this marks the initial step towards realizing the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's vision of establishing an aviation hub for the country.

The CAAB chairman was speaking at the soft launching ceremony of the third terminal of the airport on Saturday morning.

The long-anticipated addition to the Dhaka airport is expected to elevate it into a modern and efficient smart airport while expanding its air connectivity with the global community, he said.

Mafidur Rahman described the project as more significant than mere dreams, highlighting the challenges that were overcome to turn this vision into a reality.

“We had to overcome many obstacles to make this dream a reality. The prime minister gave three instructions. By complying with them, the third terminal has turned into a reality,” he further added.

The third terminal is poised to become a symbol of growth for Bangladesh's aviation industry, greatly enhancing its capabilities in handling both passengers and cargo, Mafidur Rahman said.

The development will lead to a substantial increase in the airport's annual passenger capacity, from the current eight million to over 16 million, and cargo capacity, from 200,000 tons to more than 500,000 tons. Furthermore, it is expected to bolster revenue generated per passenger.
