The second consignment of uranium, the nuclear fuel for the first unit of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP), arrived in Dhaka on Thursday.

The shipment of uranium from Russia arrived here on a special plane at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

It will be taken to Rooppur by road through full-proof security like the first batch, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Earlier, the first batch of uranium arrived in Bangladesh on September 28.

After the second shipment of uranium, five more shipments will arrive in the country in phases. Each shipment will contain 12 bundles.

Nuclear fuel will come in phases after the arrival of the seven shipments.

Thursday marks a historic day for Bangladesh as the country receives its first batch of nuclear fuel from Russia, a milestone event in the development of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.

This ceremony heralds Bangladesh's entry into the global nuclear community, making it the 33rd country worldwide to handle uranium for nuclear energy production.

Russian President Vladimir Putin joined the fuel handover ceremony of the Rooppur Nuclear power plant in Pabna, via an audio-visual link from the Kremlin in Russia, while Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina joined it virtually from Ganabhaban.

Other participants attended the program at the RNPP plant in person.
