Science and Technology Minister Architect Yeafesh Osman has said people will receive electricity from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) by early 2025, and the underprivileged population of North Bengal will benefit from this project.
The minister said this on Wednesday while speaking to reporters during a pre-inspection of the project area before formally handing over the fuel uranium to RNPP on Thursday.
“Trial production will begin only after other infrastructure, including transmission lines, is built,” he added.
Bangladesh has been elected as a member of the governing body of the International Atomic Energy Commission (IAEA). The minister expects that RNPP will contribute 2% to the country's GDP.
RNPP Project Director Dr M Shawkat Akbar said the nuclear energy project has been recognized as a nuclear facility and Bangladesh will be the 33rd member of the Nuclear Club.

RNPP is going to officially receive a fresh batch of uranium from the Russian contractor, Rosatom, at a formal Graduation Ceremony on Thursday.
According to official sources, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin are expected to virtually join the historic ceremony to mark the occasion.
The Director General of the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, will hand over the fuel officially to the project authority in the Rooppur project.
