Doctors at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) removed a cotton gauze from a woman's abdomen 17 days after her caesarean section, which was allegedly left inside during delivery at Hamid Memorial Hospital in Banaripara.
The victim, Shilpi Akter, is currently receiving treatment at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Shilpi Akter's sister Israt Jahan said their family resides in ward no 2 of Banaripara municipality.
Shilpi was under the care of Dr Lutful Aziz during her pregnancy.
She was admitted to the Hamid Memorial Hospital when she went into labour.
An initial attempt for a natural delivery was unsuccessful, leading to a caesarean section on September 13, resulting in the birth of a baby girl.
However, postoperative concerns arose when Shilpi experienced stomach pain and couldn’t pass urine, or stool.
Although various tests were conducted at the private hospital, the family was kept in the dark about the results.
As Shilpi's health deteriorated, she was transferred to the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH).
Upon examination, SBMCH doctors identified a foreign object in Shilpi's abdomen.
While they recommended seeking advanced treatment in Dhaka, a senior doctor at SBMCH undertook a three-hour operation on September 29 and removed a lengthy piece of cotton gauze.
Israt expressed her grave concern, stating: "Had it been just two or three days longer, my sister might have lost her life."
The aggrieved family demanded justice for the incident that nearly cost Shilpi her life.
Attempts to reach out to Hamid Memorial Hospital were unsuccessful.
A representative named Arpan claimed ignorance and suggested speaking to higher-ups.
Meanwhile, Dr Lutful Aziz remains unreachable despite multiple efforts to contact him.
