Three students have been expelled for vandalizing the medical centre and ragging junior students in the Department of Human Resource Management of Islamic University in Kushtia. Besides, three others have been suspended for one year.

The decision was taken during a meeting led by the university’s Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Shaikh Abdus Salam at his office on Tuesday.

After the meeting, the member secretary and proctor of the meeting Dr Shahadat Hossain Azad confirmed the information.

An inquiry committee was formed in both incidents. Rezwan Siddiqui Kavya, a student of the 2018-19 academic year of the law department, has been permanently expelled after reviewing the report of the committee.

Apart from this, the authorities have permanently expelled Mizanur Rahman Imon and Hisham Nazir Shubo of the human resource management department of the 2021-22 session for ragging a freshman student.

Three others – Shahriar Pulak, Sheikh Salauddin Saqib and Sadman Saqib Aqib – from the same department involved in ragging have been suspended for one year.

According to university sources, the vandalism took place in the emergency department of the medical centre at 11:30pm on July 10.

Earlier, in view of the written complaint of the medical authorities regarding the incident of vandalism, the three students were temporarily expelled by the authorities on July 15 and the investigation committee was formed.

Student advisor Professor Dr Shelina Nasreen was convened in the committee. After reviewing the report of the committee, Kavya was permanently expelled from the university. However, the investigation committee did not find any connection between two other students who were with him. While no formal action was taken against them, they were issued warnings as a cautionary measure.

Additionally, on September 9, a first-year student from the Department of Human Resource Management filed a written complaint of ragging against five students from the 2021-22 academic year of the same department. The authorities intervened, summoning Professor Dr Saiful Islam, the dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, to assemble a five-member investigation committee to thoroughly investigate the matter.

The accused are Hisham Nazir Shubo, Mizanur Rahman Imon, Shahriar Pulak, Sheikh Salauddin Saqib and Sadman Saqib Aqib.

After reviewing the report of the inquiry committee, the meeting of the student disciplinary committee expelled Imon and Shubo permanently and three others suspended for one year from the university.

Proctor of the university Prof Dr Shahadat Hossain Azad said that a decision has been taken based on the recommendations of the investigation committee and discussion in the meeting. An official letter will be sent to those involved after the resolution process is completed.
