Arshad Adnan Rony, the only son of Bangladesh's 22nd President Mohammad Shahabuddin, has announced his wish to contest the upcoming national election from Pabna-5 as an Awami League candidate.
He made the announcement while interacting with reporters at his residence in Pabna on Tuesday night.
Arshad Adnan Rony said: “I am aspiring to become a candidate from Pabna-5. I want to inform the people of Pabna that I will request Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for nomination for the constituency, and if she nominates me I will be able to work for the people of Pabna.”
Stating that he has his father’s blessings in this endeavour, he said President Mohammad Shahabuddin has been working for the people of Pabna ever since becoming the head of state.
“My father instructed me to come to Pabna and start working for its people,” said the president’s son.
“My father told me he could not work for the people of Pabna staying in Pabna, ‘the Prime Minister gave me the responsibility of working for the people of the whole country, so now you go to the people of Pabna, see if the people of Pabna accept you or not.’”
Highlighting his past political involvement, Rony said: "I was involved in the politics of Chhatra League and later Jubo League. Sometimes I was away for business reasons. Currently I am serving as a member of the Awami League's cultural affairs subcommittee. Since I am the son of the Awami family and the son of Pabna, I have a place for my claim.”
"I have already received a great response from the people of Pabna. My job will be to make the boat (the Awami League’s electoral symbol) the winner. If I do not get this opportunity, I will work for the person who gets the nomination, God willing.”
