Update : 28 Aug 2023, 08:31 PM

The Cabinet has approved the “National Parliament Reserved Women Seats Election Amendment Act 2023” in which the security deposit for candidates for reserved women's seats has been doubled.

Previously, the amount was Tk10,000; however, it has been increased to Tk20,000 which is equal to the security money for the general seat’s candidate, said Cabinet Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain during a press briefing at the secretariat on Monday afternoon.

The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, took place at the Prime Minister’s Office and was attended by nearly all Cabinet members on Monday.

Under the act, a by-election for the reserved seat will take place within 90 days, which was 45 days previously.

The number of reserved seats for women in parliament will also rise from 45 to 50.

This decision was made earlier and has now been formalized into law.
