Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun said the police have the ability to ensure fair polls.
“This is because this traditional institution of 100 years has experience in performing the election duties,” he said at an event organized by Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP) on Sunday.
The manpower, logistics and technical capabilities of Bangladesh Police have increased after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took charge of the country.
“During polls, the police perform their duties under the Election Commission. The police are committed to fulfilling the responsibility given by the commission,” the IGP said.
Replying to another question, he said: "Strict legal action will be taken against anyone who tries to disturb the law and order situation ahead of the national polls.”
Pointing out that there had been consistent terrorist attacks in Bangladesh before, the IGP emphasized the success of the “zero tolerance” policy against militancy and terrorism under the Prime Minister's leadership.
