A clash took place at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka when followers of the late Delawar Hossain Sayedee, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War, attempted to hold an absentee funeral prayer amid National Mourning Day prayers there on Tuesday.

DMP Motijheel Division Deputy Commissioner Hayatul Islam Khan confirmed the matter, explaining that the National Mourning Day prayer event was being organized by the Islamic Foundation.

The scuffle led to a confrontational situation, and the situation escalated when Sayedee's followers hurled brickbats at police officers, prompting law enforcement to intervene and disperse the crowd.

Several individuals were taken into custody as a result of the incident, which occurred around 1:30pm.

The situation was eventually brought under control, and police are currently present at the scene.

Paltan police station Officer-in-Charge Salahuddin Mia said several individuals have been detained on the premises of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in connection with the attack on the police officers. They will be taken to the police station for further legal proceedings.

Earlier, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq said Jamaat-Shibir men assaulted some police personnel and vandalized vehicles in Dhaka’s Shahbagh area after the death of Delawar Hossain Sayedee.

They also set fire to two motorcycles in front of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), the commissioner said at a press briefing at the DMP’s Media Centre at around 11am.

Delawar Hossain Sayedee was buried after a funeral at his self-built Sayedee Foundation near the central bus terminal of Pirojpur on Tuesday afternoon.
