A journalist died after a sand-laden truck ran over him in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur on Friday.
The incident took place on the Vakodia-Kapasia regional highway at around 10:15am.
The deceased Manzur Hossain Milon, 52, was a correspondent for the Daily Karatoa and Daily Bhorer Darpan in Gazipur. He was also the editor-in-chief of weekly Gazipur Darpan.
He has also worked in Boishakhi TV, Daily Jugantor and Dainik Dinkal. He was three times elected general secretary of Kapasia Press Club and former general secretary of Kapasia upazila Chhatra Dal.
His family alleged that Milon was murdered by being run over by a reckless sand-laden dump truck.
Milon's brother Kamal Hossen said that on Friday morning, he was on his way from his residence in Joydebpur to Kapasia's village on a motorcycle via the Vakodia-Kapasia regional highway.
The sand-laden dump truck tried to overtake the motorcycle in the narrow road and journalist Milon had to move to the side of the road for his own safety.
Later, he stopped the motorcycle and approached the truck driver to have a conversation. During the exchange of words, a dispute arose between the two.
The truck driver later became aggressive and ran over journalist Milon, crushing him under the wheels, resulting in his death, claimed the journalist’s brother.
Kamal Hossen further stated that the incident was not an accident; it was a clear case of premeditated murder.
Kapasia police station Officer-in-Charge HM Lulful Kabir said that after receiving the news, the police recovered the body of the deceased from the scene and sent it to Shaheed Taj Uddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for autopsy.
Although the killer truck was seized, the driver managed to escape after the incident, he said.
The driver and the owner of the vehicle will be brought to justice, he added.
