Jubo League on Wednesday accused the founder of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Ziaur Rahman, of being the “mastermind” and “murderer” in the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, demanding his posthumous trial.
The youth wing of Bangladesh Awami League also labelled BNP's acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, as the “mastermind” and “killer” behind the August 21 grenade attack, calling for his return to the country and the implementation of the verdict against him.
The demands were made during rallies organized by the Dhaka Metropolitan north and south units of the Jubo League at Bangabandhu Avenue.
Speakers at the rallies criticized Tarique Rahman, accusing him of leading a luxurious life abroad without any visible means of income.
They alleged that he was involved in transferring the country's wealth overseas and creating instability within Bangladesh.
"Where does Tarique Rahman's income come from, as he has no business? Sitting abroad, he is causing chaos and working towards the destruction of the country. There is no need for any other organization to respond to the cries of Tarique and Fakhrul; the Jubo League alone is enough," they proclaimed.
The youth wing of the ruling party organized the rally to celebrate the court verdict given to Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman in a graft case.
Tarique Rahman was sentenced to nine years in prison and his wife Zubaida Rahman to three years imprisonment in a case filed for amassing illegal wealth of Tk4.81 crore and concealing information about the wealth.
The court also fined Tarique Tk3 crore and Zubaida Tk45 lakh.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case in 2007.
