The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its associate bodies- Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal and Swechchasebak Dal- on Wednesday announced programs on Thursday and Friday to protest against the court verdict given to its acting chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman in a graft case.

Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal and Swechchasebak Dal will hold protest rallies on Thursday in various districts and cities across the country, excluding Dhaka, said BNP chairperson's press wing member Shairul Kabir Khan.

Meanwhile, both the Dhaka Metropolitan north and south units of the party will hold protest rallies in front of its central office in Naya Paltan on Friday, he added.

Dhaka Metropolitan South BNP Convener Abdus Salam also corroborated the program, saying BNP will hold a rally at 2pm on Friday in front of its central office in Naya Paltan.

The opposition party has submitted an application to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, seeking permission for the planned event.

The announcement of holding rallies came from the protest march immediately staged following the court verdict, where BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman was sentenced to nine years in prison and his wife Zubaida Rahman to three years imprisonment in a case filed for amassing illegal wealth of Tk4.81 crore and concealing information about the wealth.

The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case in 2007.

Tarique was also fined Tk3 crore, in default of which he will have to serve three more months in jail.

The court fined Zubaida Tk45 lakh. If she fails to pay the money, she will have to serve one more month in prison.
